Gear selector gaiter (2 seater)

Hi all.
I was assembling my gear selector and fitting the trans tunnel cover today and noticed four small holes in the GRP around the Selector hole
Looking at the felt layer that goes around the hole it doesn't appear to have any holes in it? and the Diagram i found when goggling seems to be an earlier model but it doesn't seem to have anything there either even though the set up is similar?
I'm tempted to just leave it and carry on but i thought i'd ask if there was an extra gaiter i'm missing?
Thanks,
Chris

Probaly a temporary gaiter done by a previous owner. It's hard to get the standard gaiter to stay in place.
Here is the later diagram from the incomplete WIKI on this site itself.

Thanks for that.
Now you point that out, I realise I'm missing that plate too.
I shall have to make one.

For home assembled kit built cars, assuming that the plate was included in the parts (and they may well have run out at times) many impatient owners would have fitted the gearlever even before the engine was running to sit in the seat and play driving like a child, probably quickly followed by the centre console etc.
When the engine ran it would be immediately out round the block on a test drive and then on the road.
When finally clearing up the dirt and rubbish in the garage they would have said "I Wonder what this square plate with a hole in it does?"

Heh Heh, I have vague recollection of having one long ago. Before various firms did renovation work for me.
Explains why I can never get the gaiter to stay in place now and it also explains the 4 holes in the leading message of this topic.

Had a good search this morning and found this:
It lines up with the holes in the car and i see now how the gaiter fits, i had wondered what was stopping water from the road getting in between the Gear selector and the Tunnel cover but i guess that would explain it.
Thanks for that

Just while i'm on the Gear selector area, Do you find your gear selector has a fair bit of twist in the rubber bushing? on mine its fine in the forward gears but selecting reverse seems like the bush is too soft? It's a brand new Sue Miller bushing but feels soft when i compare it to my +2? Is that right for a 2 seater?

I have an S2 and the sheet metal piece was never there from new. It looks like a good mod, however it does add weight.
