Hello,

What sizes are the 4 speed gearbox filler plug and sump plug respectively? I assume they are a whitworth size.

Thanks in advance.

Pete,

I have just measured the plugs on my 4 speed gearbox, without removing them. Judging by the outside diameter they are either 3/4 inch BSPT or NPT, both are very nearly the same outside diameter with 14 threads per inch. The thread profile of BSP and NPT are also similar, so that they are often practically interchangeable. This is not true of all nominal sizes. As Ford are an American company and were using American thread systems in Britain when our cars were new, I expect these plugs are 3/4 inch NPT. I expect if you go to a plumbers merchant you will be able to find a 3/4 inch BSPT plug to fit.

If you want me to remove the plugs and check mor carefully please reply.

Hi Richard,

Thank you very much for the help and sizes. I shall plan on that accordingly.

Cheers,

After abit of experimenting, a twelve point 17 mm socket was sufficient to loosen both plugs off. A 15 mm spanner also fitted but I didn't have enough leverage.
