5 speed gear lever

I've just taken out the gear lever from my 5 speed box to be greeted with the attached picture. The retaining ring looks like it has been broken previously. I assume it should be a complete ring. The ball (black bit) under the retaining cup (green bit) is starting to break up. Little pieces of crumbly black material were floating about.
1. Does anyone know if gear lever can be overhauled and a new ball fitted? It doesn't look if it will come apart to allow a replacement ball.
2. Has anyone replaced the retaining ring with an O ring and been successful in stopping the cup and lever from coming loose?
Regards
Graham

Andrew,
Since my initial post I have been advised that these gear levers cannot be dismantled. Have you managed to do this yourself? I would be interested to know how you got the thing apart. The circlip you mention in your post just holds down the rubber to eliminate play in the gear selector mechanism, I believe.

Graham,
You're correct, I am wrong. You cannot disassemble the 5-speed gear lever simply by removing the circlip. I was forgetting that on my lever the upper half could be separated from the lower at the anti-vibration junction, and then the lower half can be dismantled into its component parts. A replacement lever must have the blue moulding that screws into the gearbox.
