Gearbox removal

I have looked in the manual and it says to get gearbox out you have to take the engine out also, then split.

Has anyone removed the gearbox on it own?

Already got the prop unbolted at diff and slipped out of yolk out of gearbox.

Gearbox unbolted from engine. Slave cylinder off.

NOt moved box yet, ran out of time.

Would be so nice if it could be done separate, especially as all I want t do is check what flywheel I have so I can get hands on new one from one of the numerous helpful folk that got replied to my last post.

I tried earlier this year to do this and it did not work for me. I have a Spyder chassiss which is supposed to give you more room, but I could not get the box far enough back to clear the clutch.

I have done this twice on a 2 seat Elan, with factory chassis.


Remove exhaust, shifter and starter. Unhook the clutch slave and speedo angle drive and secure them out of the way. Unbolt the drive shaft and slide it back as far rearward as possible. I didn't have a reverse light switch to deal with, this would need to be unhooked if applicable.

Unbolt the bellhousing from the block. Slide the transmission rearward and rotate it (this may take some jockeying around)until it is far back as possible. There should be sufficient room for you to put your hand inside the bell and undo the release bearing from the arm. At this point GET SOMEBODY to help or use some type of support for the transmission.

Remove the four bolts holding the bellhousing to the transmission case, when the last bolt is removed, both parts are going to virtually fall out. Now you will have access to whatever items need attention.

I did this operation alone, with just a hydraulic jack for assistance.

During reassembly, one lower transmission bolt will require thread sealant.

Gearbox out and so is engine.

So easy to get the engine out decided to stop mucking about and do a few other jobs at same time.

Could be another missed summer with the plus 2.

My flywheel ring gear is destroyed, sections of teeth are missing or chunks out of them, others are wafer thin.

Hopefully one of the guys who offered me a flywheel a while back will be in touch soon.

SJ Sports Cars sell a ring gear for ?35.50 +VAT

A good one already fitted to a flywheel is an easier option but if you are stuck the new one is not mega money.

Hi,

I spotted that on Sj Sports Cars, Paul matey have ring gear for ?40.

Hopefully going to go down the easy route as got few other things to do whilst engine is out
