Gearbox oil filling problems over

Why didn't I buy one of these years ago...
http://www.performance-oils.co.uk/acata ... nsers.html
"General purpose fluid dispenser" - 9.99GBP, 15 Quid with Tax & delivery. Worth every penny - easy to control the flow into the gearbox filler hole, with almost no mess. I'm sure everybody else has already got one, but why did nobody tell me earlier?!

Till I scrolled down I thought you were talking about the rotary barrel pump. 27L /min - that would fill the gearbox pretty quickly. A little difficult to get under the car though

I've got a plastic pump/hose/nozzle combo that threads into the standard gear oil bottles we get over here. It came with a two bottle purchase, and is one of the handiest freebies I've ever used.
Check around and see if anyone is running a similar promotion, though it's been ages since I got mine.

I am about to do this job and was thinking about getting one of these from Harbor Freight.

Why don't you just remove the shift lever and pour the oil in there. If you wish, you can remove the side level plug and stop adding oil when it reaches that level. I've done this to fill my Elans for years. Also works on my '86 Toyota AE86 GTS coupe. If filling from empty, you can simply add the amount the shop manual says is the capacity.

Oh, I should mention, this won't work on a Mk1 Cortina with the shifter extension, but it would if the whole shifter extension is removed. Roger

The other options I was considering are:

What was the problem with getting the siphon pump to work?

The pumps from West Marine are like mine, except that mine has a 24" hose attached to the "faucet" spout. And the intake hose is sized to fit a standard gear oil container.
The siphon pump would always have a lot of backwash (probably cheap-o valve) and always break suction. Didn't seem to matter what viscosity fluid I was pumping, it would neither pump efficiently nor allow any extended siphoning.
I would go for either of the two pumps you just posted rather than try another siphon pump.
