Crusty,
I dont really follow your post but have you made sure the plastic (sometimes metal) cap that holds the gear lever in is screwed down tight?
By the way .....welcome to the forum

Crusty,
Not sure if this will help, but I had a similar problem, with the gear lever jamming between reverse and the 1/2 shift rod. What was happening was the gear lever was rising up too far when pulled upward. The cure was to make a spacer slipped onto the shift lever approximatey .035 thick to prevent the lever from being pulled up to far. Never had another problem.

Is the paper gasket installed under the plastic dome? Without the gasket the dome can be screwed down too far such that the lower end of the gear lever will start too foul the selector rods and cause difficult motion. Some people have had to use two of the paper gaskets.
