gearbox dubt

PostPost by: albercoc » Wed Apr 14, 2010 12:14 pm

I have a little doubt about gearbox on my elan (1970 LHD federal + 2), I have doubt that my car is mounted with the gearbox it no deserves, , I am looking for information on this because the second gear, make some noise when passing from third to second, the gearbox bearing bellhuosing not be dismantled, is all cast iron, is this the gearbox which should be mounted?

If so, where I can find parts for it?

thank you very much, Greetings John.

From your description it sounds like the car has the original 4 speed Gearbox fitted to it.
Regarding the noise when down changing, check that the Clutch is fully disengaging.
Adjustment can be made on the threaded rod that comes out of the clutch slave Cylinder.
Maybe an Oil change / check for level could help?
Other than that the Syncromesh is probably worn & indicates Gearbox overhaul.
Suppliers like Susan Miller, Paul Matty, Tony Thompson etc. All in GB should be able to help with the Parts you may need

Good luck
John

thanks, I had this doubt, I have already told me the checks, the second gear only makes noise when I reduce high revs, in normal driving almost never scratch, I found something on the suppliers you have commented me, but I see other types of gearbox is more quantity of spare parts, it seems as if the gearbox was the "ugly duckling" of the gearbox,
The issue is that my car goes really well with the gearbox, has a very long first gear, to boot, if there is some slope is necessary to abuse the clutch, and the timing with the following gear is ideal,
at first, wanted to transform a five-speed (I bought the gearbox, but without bellhousing, believed that the four-speed belhousing would serve me) but I have doubts whether the five-speed work so well as I have now,

Well, as I have no hurry, (use very little car), I'll take it in stride,

Greetings, Juan

saludos, Juan

Hi Guys,
Jp... It looks like John is saying he has a box with fixed, I.E. not removable bell housing. Is that st'd / normal on this car?
I'm not so sure but I could be wrong!

All good points of advice by the way.. Depending on outcome of some of these checks etc, I would go for some wear on selector forks / balk rings... I'd love a look! Wish I was going to Mallorca!

Good luck with it John...

thanks, Mallorca is beautiful, but has one major flaw: no lotuses, mine is the only elan of the island, in fact, everything I know about this car is what I have seen on the internet, and did not feel normal my car did not have the removable bellhousing.

Jaun,

please take another close look at where the Bellhousing joins the Gearbox; maybe the joint line is covered in oil & debris.
I know that it has nothing to do with your present problem but I'm finding it difficult to understand who would fit an alternative cast Iron Gearbox & even more difficult to think of a car maker that used one with an integral Bellhousing.
Does anyone have a Photo of the Elan Gearbox installed so that Jaun can make a comparison.
Maybe you can post a Photo from underneath your Car Jaun?

Cheers
John

Go to Burtons web site http://www.burtonpower.com/technical_1/ ... fault.aspx than go down to "General Transmission Guides" on the left which shows most of the Ford gearboxes, the type 2 has an integal bellhousing but without chassis mods for the gearlever I doubt it would fit in an Elan.

Thanks for the enlightenment Brian.
I thought that we'd be going back to 100E Sit-up & Beg Ford Pops 3 speeders to get something like that.
I think that at some time Jaun will need to take some Photos or at the worst take the Gearbox out of the Car for identification & repair.
But at the moment he seems to be prepared to live with the notchy Gearchange.

Cheers

hello, I think the translator is not very accurate and I can not express myself well. I can not photograph the car, I have anywhere else other than the living, and is a bit far, this weekend, maybe go and can shoot, anyway, I found a picture on a web page with a gearbox is surely as my car, but do not put that at no time had been mounted on the elan, my car is inport the U.S., maybe that's diferante is a +2. Chassis No. 502,121. I put the photo copied from the Internet. and one of my car. Regards Juan

I do believe that the box fitted to early, std. Escorts ( 1100/1300) as well as Cortina mk. 2 (?) had the integral bellhousing. This box can be made to fit an Elan, but the trumpet and selector mechanism must be altered. Internals are the same !
