Transporting an Elan shell

Hi All

I need to move an Elan shell (or two) and was wondering the best way of transporting it / them. I have an enclosed trailer but was wondering if it's best to sit the shell on a bare chassis in the trailer to secure it more easily?

Any help much appreciated!

I had to move a couple of cars in bits a few hundred miles, so they were going to be done in one go. One sat on a chassis, which made it hard to manhandle, and the other sat piggyback over the other car. Using a few pallets and bales of wool, no damage was done, and even the paint was fine. I wouldn't use this method if I was just collecting the shell after being painted though!

If the trailer is enclosed, just a strap through the doors and over the sills would be fine.

One body on one chassis, no problem, do you have room to suspend the second body above, using ropes attached on the sides of the enclosed trailer?

I did it in many ways. for long distance, a mercedes sprinter with long wheelbase, works fine...
just open the backdoors and move it in...you have to secure the shell for acceleration ;-)

for short distance a trailer, as you see in the picture...in germany we have a speedlimit by driving
with a trailer...so a van is more pleasant...

Thanks guys - I'm probably only moving one at a time - selling one and maybe buying another! I was thinking of putting some old tyres on the floor of the trailer and strapping the shell down onto them. It would just fit within my roof rack limits but I'd better not chance it :-)

A few years ago I moved an Elan shell several hundred miles on an open unsprung trailer. I was very careful to block under the boot floor so as not to have that part pf the car trying to break off from the rest of the body through the rear arches. I had a nice safe move.

Here is another alternative. I just put some plywood over the roof rack bars. Worked great.

Hi Guys,
When I took my body down south from Scotland (To Bromsgrove) for its refurb and paint I slid it onto a flat back pickup and lightly secured it thru the doors with ratchet straps. The return trip was another matter altogether! Frank from option 1 said he would kill me if I marked 'his' paintwork so he took control of the loading a bit.. The car was sat on two 6'' x 2'' (approx) bearers the complete width of the truck so they could not move sideways. Two pc's of timber were then screwed to these to fit tight against the headboard and tail board preventing the bearers from moving back of forward. The body was then secured using coach-bolts (6mm dia) down thru' the bobbins into the bearers effectively screwing the body onto the bearers which could not move in any direction. Two screw nails in each end of the bearers held the entire ass'y to the truck and was very effective in holding the body for its trip back up home.. Not a tiny scratch!! Braw!!

The pick up sat at approx 60-70 mph all the way down and back...

It never moved a millimeter... Pleased to say. Frank was also V happy with the arrangement. Methinks he has done this before .. :roll:
