Transportation of my plus 2

PostPost by: martinbrowning » Fri Feb 19, 2010 9:22 am

Hi everybody,

I currently have my S130 stripped for respray, and have it booked in to Matty's for the end of March. Because I live in Northern Ireland transportation is a problem (called the Irish Sea). Through the web I have found a company called Andy Dunne Car Transport, based in Pudsey West Yorkshire, who regularly move vehicles to/from the mainland.Their quote (just under ?400) is less than what it would cost me to move the car myself.

Just wondered whether anybody knew of them, had used them or could recommend a company to move the car for me.

(Not sure about colour for the car yet........as built it was cirrus white but PO resprayed in Black/gold. That combination is good but it makes the car look like something it isn't-it is not an original JPS car so might look at another period combination),

Regards,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Firstly, why on earth are you taking your car to Mattys for a respray. As far as i am aware, they dont do any of the work themselves, they just farm it out and stick their % on top. Matty even said as much to a forum member a while ago, and told them who they used. I cant remember who that was, but perhaps they will chip in if they read this. Also, another member recommended Mick Hadley Autos for a repaint. They are at the top of the vendor listing as we speak. And what about the people Adi used to paint his car, looks beautiful, although i dont think he said who carried out the work. Ask him. But the last people i would go to, were folk that dont do the work in house.

Secondly, Andy Dunne was recommended to me, but i am in the south and so were the cars that i needed moving. I believe he is in the Midlands somewhere, so it wasnt economical for him to come down here.

Try these people, gave me very competitive quotes;
Spirit 07918 626967
Flying Blue Dog Trailer Services 01784 430705 Melvin Spear
G D Vehicles 01603 412545

Let us know how you get on,

Leslie

Hi Martin,
Whoever you use to move the car make sure that they will actually do the whole door-to-door job themselves. I have some past experience moving trucks to/from Ireland both north and south and what you may find is that transport companies will sub contract the job to keep their costs low. They may use an agent in Ireland to collect the car from you, deliver it to the docks and load it on the ferry, then collect it from the UK port and deliver it on themselves. That way they have only one way ferry costs. Obviously the car will be unattended at the ports and on the crossing and vulnerable to possible damage and theft of parts. Also make sure that the transport company you select has proper and adequate insurance cover for your vehicle whilst in transit.

Hi there

I have used Mick Hadley's in the past and found them to be very good. There workshop was full of Lotus cars having bodywork repaired (mostly insurance work I guess) they certinly understand GRP bodywork and their pricing is reasonable. I would want to make sure that they address the high stress areas to prevent a recurrence of the gel coat cracks in these areas. As I undestand Matty's approach they undertake the body repairs/reinforcement and simply send the car to a paintshop (they use Mick Hadleys as well as Option 1).

Best of luck

Andy
