Which diff?

Yes they are, Alex, as are Cortina and Corsair...they are all English axles.
One of the most expensive ratios to find is the 3.77 : 1, the original for the Plus 2. It was fitted to twincam escorts, RS1600 and Mexicos. Otherwise there's a huge range to choose from.
Elan diffs complete with casings often come up on eBay, and are probably a better bet with less weight to drag around, and a bit of protection from the old rotoflex couplings...but if you want to change the ratio, an Escort / Cortina diff is probably the way to go.
The only thing to look out for is the front coupling to propshaft. There are at least 2 different sizes on Elans, and only one of those appears on the Ford diff...but easy enough to change if you count the turns.

Mark,I'm intrigued by your comment that only one of the flanges used on the Elan diff is available on a Ford item. To the best of my knowledge there were 3 differently sized flanges fitted by Ford, two of which have the correct diameter locating spigot that mates to the prop flange, being 85mm and 92mm diameter (may be wrong as I'm at work so don't have exact dimension to hand)My plus 2 uses the larger of these..I would assume the earlier Elans would use the smaller version.
Brian.
