Checking Diff

PostPost by: Chris-72-Sprint » Tue Jun 03, 2008 9:46 pm

Is there a way of checking the diff without stripping it down.

The diff in my car seemed fine when the car was taken off the road for the resto - no whining or vibration.

Having now removed the intermediate drive shafts I can feel some play in the diff output transmission shafts if I hold both shafts and turn forward and back.

Is this normal or do I need to have it checked by someone who knows about diffs :-)

thanks in advance

What you can feel is the backlash between the crownwheel and pinion gear teeth - this is quite normal. On assembly this is set to 5-7 thou.

If your diff was not noisy in operation I would leave well alone, a rebuild will be expensive and if not done properly you could end up worse off - if it aint broke..........

Most of the backlash you feel at the output shafts is actually in the spider gears not the crown wheel and pinion.

Free play of a few millimetres at the ends of the output shaft donut coupling arms is normal.

If the diff was making no noise and not leaking I would leave it alone

cheers
