5 speed Lotus box into a Sprint

PostPost by: stuartgb100 » Tue May 27, 2008 7:11 pm

I'm going to put a Lotus 5 speed into my Sprint this Summer ............ for better or for worse !!

I've found a couple of url's giving advice on this sucject, and specifically, suggesting modifications prior to the installation :

www.lotuselan.de look for the 5 speed conversion tip

http://www.gglotus.org/ggtech/elan-5spd/elan-5spd.htm

Can anyone who's done this, advise what is worth doing and what not, please?

I'd also be grateful for advice on modding the prop. So as to get ahead, can someone give me a finished length, please?

Many thanks and Regards,
Stuart.

Stuart make sure when you buy the box you get the release bearing carrier & the spigot bearing carrier that sits in the flywheel centre as the gearbox input shaft does not reach the crank as per the 4 speed. As well as bell housing get the gearbox mount & re drill the chassis & +2 prophaft. Make sure you measure the flange to flange gearbox to diff as the article i had stated the wrong length. The change is not as nice as the 4 speed but is well worth it for the overdriven 5th. I dont know if i can find the article i had if i can i will pm you.

Stuart
.....and first gear is a lot better if you're stuck in slow moving traffic you don't have to keep slipping the clutch....

Also be careful that the clutch driven plate is free to move on the spline.

The centre spline boss is slightly to long and it can bottom out at the end of the gear box end of the spline when assembled causing the plate to not quite disengage properly from the flywheel. This is the cause of a lot of the complaints about poor sychros in this gear box.

There was a Lotus service note published about it that described machining a little off the centre spline boss of the driven plate to cure this problem. If you have trouble selecting 1st gear when stationary at times then you probably have this issue

cheers
