Gearbox leak at speedo junction

PostPost by: SADLOTUS » Wed Oct 24, 2007 10:46 pm

Hi all again, just filled the gearbox with new oil - first time since engine out over a year ago. I had the speedo cog out and associated bits, cleaned and checked them whilst everything on the bench. Now the oil's in there's a leak from the seal of the aluminium plug that the speedo drive goes through. I can't rely/hope that when the 'box heats up with use the seal will swell and everything will cure itself so I'm draining the oil to replace the seal over the weekend.

Anyone know if this part is a straight forward regular size rubber seal, or an order from Ford/Lotus dealer?

'Suppose I'll know when I get it out!

Just wondered if anyone would say 'Oh yes that, it's 1 1/2 inch rubber O seal from Halfords'

Thanks
Paul

The o-ring on the aluminium insert is a standard size that I have bought from bearing ditributors in the past. Make sure the fork holding it in place has not bent and that it is firmly clamped down. I normally put a smear of silicone under the head of the fitting to help seal to the geat box. Then make sure the angle adapter is properly fitted on and sealing. I again put a small smear of silicone on the sealing face of the angle adapter to help it seal to the aluminium insert.

cheers

Paul,

I had the same problem with my S2 when I bought it last year. Used a bit of Hylomar around the "O" ring and the aluminium, no more leaks after a year of driving.
