Door rebound pads???

PostPost by: nomad » Thu Nov 28, 2024 1:55 pm

Is there a source for the foam door rebound pads for an S1/S2. I'm agonizing over what to fit. Standard open cell foam will become a big sponge in the rain.

Hello Kurt
I installed a radiator hose instead of the foam. Symbolically shown in black in the picture.
I screwed it to the door.
I drilled a hole through the hose crosswise, drilled a larger hole in the outside and screwed it straight through. Don't ask me about the diameter because it was a long time ago. I think it was about 30mm. I chose it a little too big, but it works very well and the doors opens enough. There is no risk of damage and I am still very happy with it as it is. The big advantage is that no water or dirt collects.
Greetings Urs

Thanks! Good idea and it isn't a big sponge!

Hello Kurt The pivot point of the door is further back (white arrow in the photo). So you have to mount the hose so that it presses on the body in the direction of the yellow arrows, without the outside of the door ever being able to touch the edge of the body. As far as I remember (it's been 32 years), you can't go wrong. Unfortunately, I'm still far away from my Elan for a few weeks, otherwise I could send you even better photos. If it's not urgent, I can do it later if you want.

Well, I will do a trial and error approach.
Thanks

I fitted a piece of foam back there that I think was 1" thick, but thickness depends on the foam's firmness. That piece behaved okay so I think I stuck it in with some adhesive, but I'm now foggy on the details. John

Just buy closed cell foam. Local hardware store, McMaster-Carr, MSC, Amazon, etc. Sheets of closed cell neoprene are cheap on Amazon.

And the foam is not essential. I'm going on 31 years in my S1 without it.

Thanks, Steve.
I admit that I haven't been looking where you suggest.
