Interior mirror rubber FHC

PostPost by: tonyabacus » Tue Oct 29, 2024 11:28 am

I have an S4 Elan FHC and need to locate the white rubber spacer that attaches between the rear of the mirror and the windscreen, to stop the mirror from vibrating. Anyone know a source for these

That may have been added by a previous owner. In my DHC, I cut a piece of fuel hose at an angle and put it behind the mirror fitting against the windshield. Worked a treat.

Best regards,
Dan

Used a similar approach on my Plus 2 mirror, but not sure if it differs from your coupe. At any rate, a thinner wall cover from a dual bullet electrical connector fitted well without cutting.

Thanks guys for the replies and will bear them in mind. It has got me wondering where these concour restoration businesses involved with $m dollar plus restos get the correct parts, so anyone with links to any of these restos guys, please ask them so we can pass on to other members

My S4 FHC has the original white rubber bung, unfortunatley now badly perished and cracked. I am sure I could make something that would work but it must have originally been off some other English car of the time

I wouldn't mind seeing some photos of your mirrors, if possible, please guys. My '68 S4 FHC has a Lucas 608 mirror, probably not original, and my '67 S3 FHC has the Zodiac Mk3 mirror, on which I can't see anywhere that there should be a piece of rubber. I'd like to know what to look out for if I want to get the S4 back to original.

Cheers

Rohan
Thanks for the picture, that's exactly the part and it must have been used by others in the 1960's 70's, so does anyone recognise either the rubber or the mirror and what they may have been fitted to.

That looks like it's suffered badly in the Melbourne heat, Rohan!

Great idea!

I can’t get a similar picture to Rohan’s (I have a tint strip hat makes it hard to photograph), but my Plus 2 mirror is the same. My stock spacer was in identical shape when I replaced it. Not sure if that helps the OP. Good luck in your search.

The mirror in my 1970 +2S is very similar to Rohan's. The support is the same but the mirror itself is a slightly different shape (not as flat). The rubber is the same and is not in much better condition either...

Thanks for all the replies, and the part I am looking for is identical to Rohan's.

I can't believe Chapman would have had a mirror specially made, so it must have neen fitted to other cars of the period. I can't recall the mirror used in the Type 14 Elite's but if anyone has any thoughts about where Chapman might have sourced the interior mirrors please shout up
Thanks
