clamp on exterior mirror

I need to put on an outside mirror (LHD) S3 and don't want to drill in a pristine, no holes, door.
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around whether or not this will work on the window channel
for a LHD car. I like this one the most from all the clamp on styles I've seen.

The picture show a RHD fixing and the text says it'll work.
Here's a picture for the future when the ebay link goes away.
What do you think?

I have a rectangular one and the clamp refuses to stay onto the window frame.
I gave up with it.

I have seen a new design, or at least I think it is new, on several other classics of late. I do not know the make.
JD Classics have a rather nice E-Type for sale at the moment with some close ups of the mirror. It appears to be a clamp-on type with a good secure fixture, per photos below.

A word of warning, not all the clamp on mirrors will fit the Elan.. I bought a pair that looked really nice, but I could not adjust them to get the correct angle for use. It appeared that they were for a vertical attachment like a quarterlight glass. I had to put a large twists in the mounting bracket. which damaged the chrome and also meant that the decorative cover would no longer fit.
You may need to get one with a twisted/cranked bracket, and because of the twist they are handed so you need to specify left or right side.I have just ordered one so hopefully I can get ir to fit.
For those who have fitted these mirrors, did you trim the door channel rubber/felt to give space for the clamp, or did you compress the felt/rubber with the clamp?

In an unrelated curiosity, were clamp-on mirrors original equipment on any cars? I'm only curious because I saw one that looked like the design in Mark's picture on a black saloon driven by the cops in an episode of Father Brown and wondered if, being a decades-old car, the mirror was correct equipment or something fitted later.

I believe that most accessories were fitted by the supplying dealer rather than the factory. Wing mirrors, mud flaps, radios etc likely gave the dealer a good mark up.
Nowadays, of course, it is the manufacturers who pile up the so called optional extras. They realised they were missing out on the extra margin!

Hi all,
I have fitted one of the clamp-on mirrors, but I am not sure what to do with the window rubber/felt.
For those who have fitted these mirrors, can you explain what was done with the rubber/felt.
Do I cut out a piece of the rubber/felt to leave a gap in the rubber/felt to accommodate the clamp?
Or do I trim the backing rubber only leaving some of the felt/rubber behind?
Or do I trim the felt only and let the rubber bulge out?
Thanks for any suggestions..
