Number plate light holes

PostPost by: Bud5000 » Sun Sep 03, 2023 3:21 am

The two holes where the back of the number plate lights go measure 32mm. Is that about the standard size for an early plus 2 or have these ones been made bigger?

I think you only need holes for wiring grommets. You need to seal them too to stop water draining into the Boot.

Those have been made bigger but I don't think it matters.

I used 10mm thick self adhesive closed cell foam strip around the recess to control water ingress - it gets compressed to form a seal when the bumper is fitted.

Thanks team, I like the idea of the compressible foam. May use that and the addition of wiring grommets to hopefully give it a super seal.

In case it's of interest, this is what I found when I removed the rear bumper on my 1970 +2S. From what I could see, there was the remains of the original factory sealant which had been covered over by a later paint job (the car has only been repainted once). There was a thick circle of sealant around each number plate hole, and a line of sealant around the rim of the "dip". There is also a plug between the number plate holes (which can be seen on your car).

Sealant seemed to be the answer for everything and directly from the workshop manual. No matter.
The "plug" on mine is in fact a bolt head where the support for the boot lock is, I believe.
