RESINE ISO or ORTHO

PostPost by: alan.barker » Tue Aug 29, 2023 5:49 am

What resine are you boys using.
I'm only using ISO Marine quality now.
I was supplied with ORTHO and found it no good for me, the surface stays tacky

Hello

I use Davids epoxy fibreglass matting mixture.

Perfect for all fibreglass repairs.

I have been doing repairs to some cracks using Miles Wilkins method as i have always done. Resin, matt, tissue only no P40 filler with fibres.
But the last Tin of Resin i bought was identified as "Ortho" and it leaves a sticky surface which i don't like.
I will return to the shop and change it for "Iso Marine grade" which i prefer and it doesn't leave a sticky surface.
I would like to know if others have sucess with the "Ortho" resin.
So do you boys prefer "Iso" or "Ortho".

I use East Coast Fibreglass Supplies general purpose polyester resin
https://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/resins
I note it is an ortho resin. I hadn't even considered that before as it just seems to work. Stimulated by your thread to read more, I note the 'Lloyd's approved' resin appears to be a different spec.

Great we're all learning.
I understand that "Ortho" is the cheap one and not the strongest(stays sticky).
I understand "Iso" is stronger and resists better against water/dampness.
The one i'm not using which is the strongest of all is "Epoxy".
I prefer to use resin not too different so they flex together in harmony but that's my personal idea.

Ok i'll mix some "Ortho" with new MEK on my wetting out board and see if it dries sticky.
Cheers

I know it's obvious, but I'll mention it anyway, it's worth using 1 ml syringes to get the hardener amounts right. Check the manufacturers recommendations, I use 2% with the East Coast stuff

Just bought "ISO MARINE" Resine which should dry with "dry" surface which is needed for finishing.
ORTHO dries with tacky surface which is ok if you laminate ontop. I think a trick with ORTHO is to cover with Clingfilm to get it to harden with "non tacky surface" .
Easier to buy "ISO MARINE" .
PERSONAL CHOICE.

My understanding is that Ortho is deigned for mould use where it has an airtight outer edge, for example in the tissue layer. ISO is for later and final layers which are in contact with the air. I may, of course, be entirely wrong!

Thanks Mike that confirms what i think.
If Ortho used on outside surface you need to cover with Clingfilm or something.
Cheers
