+2 Battery position next to fuel tank

PostPost by: pete.chiswell » Wed Jul 05, 2023 5:35 pm

Hi I have +2 S 130 with the battery in the boot next to the fuel tank. A friend who is a fireman told me that he has attended two incidents of a shunts with Lotus +2 and the battery and tank exploded and killed the driver, he has advised me to reposition the battery has any one experience or suggestions of where to position the battery

I have attached a couple of images of my +2 zetec fuel tank and battery position, I can't see any major safety issue with this setup. It is a little different from standard in that the boot board has been redesigned to accomodate a space saver wheel and provide a well behind the battery.
Perhaps someone has pictures of a standard set up, but I can't remember it being much different to this.

Arguably, the Elan has a worse setup from a safety perspective, both the battery and the fuel tank are less protected than the +2.

The early Elans had the battery behind the passenger seat - which made sense from a handling perspective, but I am not sure about safety.

It is common for racers to have the battery in the passenger footwell, and with modern AGM or Li ion batteries, they are much smaller than the old flooded lead acid batteries and could be accommodated without taking up too much space. It also has the advantage of shortening the cable to the starter solenoid.
