S3 Coupe interior mirror

PostPost by: gjz30075 » Fri Jan 13, 2023 9:26 pm

My interior mirror is quite loose at the ball joint so I shimmed it with some pieces of tin foil. It's
better but I'm wondering where is the wear area? The ball or the clamping pieces? Or, am I
missing some sort of insert (plastic?) that give it some resistance? With the two pieces of tin
foil and the clamping screw fully screwed in, it's still not tight.

This is really a continuation of this thread

I'd just like a better fix.

Did you check if the removal clamping piece was flat, or bent by the screwing force on the ball? if the cast metal has gone soft I'm afraid it'll be difficult to restore it, and if you want an similarly elegant setup you'll have to make a new one (which is what I did, in alloy - lots of filing of a hard to hold small part, but it restored functionality and looks quite the same from a distance if not chromed)

Hmm, good thought Nick. I haven't checked that. Thank you.
