Sprint decals paint or stick on

It's in the title,
Use stick on sidewinder decals or paint them on.
My Sprint will be painted soon complet.
My paint shop has said they can paint "Elan Sprint" and all the Band. That way it will be exactly same colour as Bumpers. My paint shop does lots of graphic spraying and is a real Artist.
I'm tempted to give it a go and i've never liked the "stick on " plastic band (cheap and tacky yuk.

The stripes part is easy so providing they can get the font correct then I'd go for it. If you've decided on a two tone finish then it's not as if you'd be removing the stripes in the future so they may as well be painted on.
They'll give it a coating of lacquer to finish and smooth it off and for me that would be far better than stick on plastic. No chance of fading in sunlight, easier to clean, sounds a great idea.

That's just the boost i needed. Painted Stripes it will be. He said he will use a laser to be 100% horizontal.

As an addition to this thread, has anyone clay barred their sprint paintwork which has the stickered stripes? I’d like to do mine but am concerned about any residue staining the stripes.
Any suggestions welcome.

Richard

Salut Alan,
I will follow with interest how this will progress. If your painter can do this well, then its definitely the right way to go,and I want to try this on my last Sprint restoration.
I have seen this done once before, but was not impressed with the outcome,as the font and stripes were not correct. However if he can mask the car properly,it would be really nice.I will wait to see how yours turn out, before I decide how to do my next car,as it is onerous and very involved work, unless you can get a laser precut masking layout.Your painter is on the right track with using the laser to get the stripes straight, but first you must have the bodyshell completely horizontal and level, otherwise you end up with a straight line at a jaunty angle! With the doors fitted correctly,i measured up 100mm from the bottom of the door, before masking the line, see attached photo's,but the height is a personal choice, but this could be a starting point for you.If he is painting the car in base and clear,he should be able to lacquer over the entire thing, and leave a beautifuly flat imperceptible finish on the stripe to bodywork transition.
As for the claybarring, backmask the stripe but do not let the adhesive on the masking,or the products touch the decals, they are neither abrasive resistant or colourfast.
I look forward to the results, well done for choosing this method.
Roy.

So so sad all this dicussion about stickers. Boy racers used to use them to make their cheepo boxes look racey. Never worked.
This message is coming to you from the top of the mountain that is the place where owners of the the best of the bunch - S3SEs sit!! D

So to return to the subject.
Does someone know the letter font that's to say for example "times roman", "aerial" or whatever.
Please no waffle/banter from scrumpy drinking land please.

Without knowing for certain, it's likely that there isn't an off the peg font, the original design may well have been done by hand by a graphic artist...doing whatever he or she decided looked good.

thanks,
i've looked at "Microgramma" and it seems not too bad. The thing is also to get the individuel letters cleanly cut out. To stick on the white then the gold can be sprayed. The lines can be 3mm wide self adhesive coachline tape.
i'll see in several weeks when the car is ready for the paint shop.

Haver to agree with TBG about the 'Go Faster' stripes!
I think a thin black pinstripe between the main body colour and the white bottom looks most classy.

Ashley,
Have you tried painting the sidewinder on your car.
My Sprint will have sidewinders for sure, sorry but that's not in question.
What i need to decide is as in title "stick on" or "paint".
Depending on owners experiences of painting instead of stick on.
I'm one of those Anoraks that like to keep cars to look like they came out of the Factory.
If my Sprint had been rebuilt like a bitsa it wouldn't matter.
