Grey underside paint

PostPost by: Giff » Sun Jul 17, 2022 11:27 am

Hi,

I’ve seen several race cars undersides painted with a brush on light grey paint. Love the clean work surface it provides.

What is recommended, is it a polyester or resin based paint?

Anyone have a link?

Thanks

I think you’re referring to the gel coat which is the base layer over which the GF mat is laid. It’s not painted on but the colour of outer layer of the body applied during build. If you clean off all the crap you should find it’s still there.

Where I have repaired this gel coat on the underside I have used Hammerite Smooth mixed to the correct grey colour using black and white paints. Just be careful to measure and record the mix to get the same shade each time.

Hi

I am painting underside and inside of my +2 shell with a paint called Gravitex. Well worth checking out I think.
All the best

Zetec+ 2 under const, also 130S. And another 130S for complete restoration. Previously Racing green +2s with green tints. Yellow +2 and a couple of others, all missed. Great to be back 04/11/2021 although its all starting to get a bit out of control.

This sort of stuff, bit darker than the gel coat, maybe a polyester type paint that should have good adhesion:

Well this took a while..

Underside cleaned and stripped to gel coat (where it remained), old repairs made good (I’m still itchy) and coated in 2 part epoxy primer (amazing adhesion) and the 2part epoxy gloss.

Still some way to go with the gloss but getting there..
