Steel wheels - colour

PostPost by: jono » Wed Jun 15, 2022 12:52 pm

At some point I need to have the steel wheels for my 1968 Plus 2 restoration project blasted and painted.

I'm looking for some suggestions on the shade of silver, or the Lotus colour code.

The car is Cirrus white, or shortly will be, and I think that this colour and silver steel wheels just looks great on an early Plus 2 but I would like to get the wheel shade 'right'

I'm inclined to go with a slightly darker silver, almost a 'pewter' shade, but would welcome views and what others have done.

Another question - if I had them blasted and then etch primed them, would they take a powder coat finish or does that need a bare metal start?

Cheers

Jon

I would avoid a powder coat finish if to have knock ons. The powder coat cracks for a pastime and could lead to loose wheels. Been there done that! D

Sure, if I did that, or even painted, it would need to be removed where the spinners make contact

Nexa Code 2999Metallic
Autocolor Code D513B Lacquer

Lotus Name: Silver Lacquer, it had no Lotus colour code.

Used Oct 62 - Jan 71 on S1, S2, S3 & S4 bumpers and wheels.

Ford Australia Silver Fox Met a very close match, Glasurit code 01652

The problem with removing powder coating is it not easy and leaves raw edges for damp to get underneath. I think paint is a much better solution - unless you don't use your car and want it to look pretty!! D

There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

I used Eastwood Silver Argent rally wheel paint for wheels and bumpers. Argent means silver or silvery white. I looked it up . Cleared the bumpers but not the wheels. Has held up well and I think it looks good. No affiliation to Eastwood. Gary
