2 Hole spire (Tinnerman) clips for Bonnet/Hood latches

PostPost by: pharriso » Thu Apr 15, 2021 4:31 pm

Does anyone have a source for the spire clips with 2 holes which are used to hold the hood latches in position?

bonnet-catch-024.jpg and

I have 1 & need another....

I've made a plate with 2 seperate U clips attched, but read that the clip should go in the engine apartment so you can get to the screws to unscrew them if the cable snaps.

Original clip on right, functional replacement left...

I've searched Google, Matty, SJS & can't find a source...

Hey Phil, Somehow I've misplaced my 2 hole Tinnerman clips and I realized I was waisting too much time searching, so I made a pair of replacements from scrap aluminum sheet, cut close to the size of the originals, and I punched 2 starter holes 3/4 apart and they will be on the inside of the car, where no one will see them. Screw heads are visible under hood (bonnet).

I'm not giving up on my original Tinnermans, but I've wasted way too much time searching. I'm sure they'll pop up as long as I'm not looking for them. LOL Roger

That's pretty much what I have done, I mounted 2 U shaped Tinnermans on a piece of Ali.

Technically they (the clips) should be in the engine bay as shown in the first picture so if the cable snaps you can still get the bonnet (hood) open if the cable snaps. Per this comment in the Workshop Manual:

Still, I won't tell anyone if you don't!

Funny How I am minus one & you have lost both... shame they now appear unobtainable. I'll keep my eyes open...

When I took them apart a few years ago, they went into marked prescription vials. Should also have the mating screws in the same vial. Express Scripts used to use these nice amber translucent vials, that were great for this.

£3.95 postage on the UK website I listed above, but no dimensions.

Maybe contact them for the dimensions?

Well chaps I found a source for clips very similar to the originals.

Here's the original clip:
IMG_3027.jpg and

Here is the replacement
ILL-EFSN-TWN-D-V03.jpg and

The only differences is that the distance between the 2 holes is 1/4 further apart (1" rather than 3/4") & the clip is 1/4" longer overall; So you can either re-drill 1 or both of the holes in the body for the #6 mounting screws. Same width, same mounting screw size, same material & finish.

Only issue is I had to buy 200!!

So, if anyone one else needs the clips, I can supply 4 for $5 in the States or 4 for GBP5 mailed to the UK. Just PM me & I will send my paypal details & will need your mailing address. Why 4 you ask? so when you drop/lose one you will already have a spare...

Yes that is identical to the original & would be prefect if you could buy less than 200 without a minimum order cost & shipping.

Phil,

I made my own. Not period correct, but a piece of stainless flat bar drilled and tapped is functionally the same.

Hope this helps,
