Horn push /steering wheel Boss

PostPost by: wobblyweb » Sun Mar 21, 2021 6:03 pm

I need a horn push/centre boss for my Sprint and would like to 3D print the parts.
Would it be possible for someone to let me have some dimensions?
I would like to know :-
The diameter and thickness of the part on the back of the wheel.
The height of the boss from the wheel to the horn push.
The diameter of the horn push where it joins the boss.
I will attempt a cad drawing in 3D and see how it goes!

Thank you

Maybe I can help if you can't find anyone that over there. I've sold all my Elan steering wheels, except two Nardi wheels that fit the Elan Hubs. The one like you need is still with me to be picked up later. So I took pictures of the hub on the wheel and I disassembled the hub with many more pics. I can't show all of the picture on this site, but if you go to my website, knockoffspinnertool.com you'll see my Email address. Send me yours and I'll be able to send all of the pictures and measurements that you need to do a 3D printed version. If you draw a printed version of the tool, I can make an aluminum two part Hub.
It looks like I'm restricted to the numbers of pictures. On my website you will see what I have done using 3D printed versions to be able to make my spinner tools in aluminum.
Glad to help!
Sarto

Hi Sarto.
Thank you for the photos and offer of measurements.
I have emailed your web address .
I have tried using Tinkercad for the 3D and with a bit more practice should be able to manage a drawing.

Thanks again

Hi, when you get it sorted, I am one who will buy a set, and I am sure others will also.
Cheers

I'll see what I can do to make a Hub with one I still have and maybe one for the early springall's Hub. Some years ago, there was a guy who made a hub for the early Springall wheel. I was not able to find his info.
Here is a picture of the wheel and Hub before it was coated in black. Also, an early Springall wood wheel and a hub I had restored and sold.
If there is any kind of interest for either hubs styles, I'll see what I can do to reproduce originals. Unfortunately, I don't have the early hubs to use. If someone that has the early Springall hub that needs to be restored, I'll restore it free for the use for measuring it to make a reproduction. PM me for details or view my website for my email and contact info. knockoffspinnertool.com

Rae,

There is a company in Gloucestershire jacobengineering.co.uk who make steering wheels. I have just had a quick look at there web site and they appear to have what you intend to make. Might be worth investigating?

Hope this helps,

Thank you Richard.
I did know about Jacob Engineering and its my intension to buy one of their wheels.
I would want the later version with 3 holes but they do not have the correct boss for that one.
The earlier wheel with boss is £100 more so I guess that is the boss price. It seems to me that a 3d printed boss would be OK and I've got nothing to loose by trying. Sarto has given me good info but I would still like the diameter at the base of the boss if possible.
Thank you

Here are pictures of the under part of the sprint Hub from the back in inches and MM Also the center part.
Hope that will help a little.

I would consider carefully the printing of the column splines, remember if they fail steering will be completely lost.
5/8 OD 36 splines.

I was assuming only the bit holding the badge would be 3d printed. I wouldn't use a 3d printed one for more than testing the main hub. Once you have the drawing plenty of companies who can machine one from aluminum.

Mark Davies Racing "MDR" Shows the elan steering wheels with Hubs and horns combo. I used him when I was restoring a Jaguar. He has both the springall wood wheel like mine and he also has the sprint wheels and Hubs. You night be able to talk him into selling just the hub.?? He normally only sells the complete wheels.

The spline count might be different on the two Hubs??? The steering shaft on my Elan used the Triumph spitfire steering column. I'm not sure about the steering shaft on a Sprint hub. If you know what part needs a measurement, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Anyway, according to the Photo Gallery archive a Sprint wheel hub looks like this :-

Thank you for the replies. I've not been able to get on with it for a few days. My plan is to use the splined boss I have fitted now so need to make the horn push for decoration only. Not sure how it will all pan out but nothing lost if it doesn't.
Thank you

If it is just the horn push, that fit into the hub, I may have one and if it is the yellow and green or the black and silver logo part, Ray at RDEnterprises has both that are a perfect match to the original ones I paid big bucks for.
Also, Triumph spitfire has the same horn push that fits on Elan’s, cheap!

Hello

I've not posted anything here before, I bought a 1970 +2S last year and gradually sorting a few things out on it. It has a period Springall/Springalex wheel which is OK but I'd prefer to fit the original larger wheel.
I've been able to source potential 15" wheels from Lotus Club members but none have the front horn parts. The button with the badge appears to be available off the shelf for the earlier boss but my impression from this discussion is the part it sits in which attaches to the wheel is very hard to find. I've seen a couple of references to Triumph ones being the same but can't determine which model this is to explore further.
I contacted Jacob Engineering a couple of weeks ago and he doesn't have spare bosses, he did say if there was sufficient demand i.e. 100 he could possibly get some made or he thought in 2 years approx. he would be getting a new batch and others could be added if that is of interest to anyone?
I was interested to know if the plans to create drawings and produce one had been pursued?

Many thanks

Chris - I live near Bath in Somerset, UK
