Glove box handle +2S??

PostPost by: martynw » Tue Dec 08, 2020 9:06 pm

In the process of fitting a new dash from Classical Dash to my 1970 +2S at the moment, and was just about to drill the glove box flap to refit the handle from the old one when I started having doubts if it should have one.

The "Tutch latch" was missing from the old dash and had been replaced with a magnetic one from B&Q, so you needed a handle to pull it open, something I won't need now I have the correct latch. I also noticed the handle is actually one removed from an ashtray, so doesn't look out of place but could easily be a bodge.

Any help appreciated.

I don't believe the glovebox has a handle if it has a "tutch latch", my +2S130 doesn't anyway. Handle would just be extra weight and cost...

Yes,if you have a tutch lock you won’t need a handle, the early +2 had a handle, longish chrome one not an ash tray one,so DONT drill any holes, good luck getting the tutch lock adjusted correctly it can be a pain,I know, regards Phil

Thanks fellas. Had come to the conclusion I wouldn't fit one until I knew for sure anyway. All that lovely veneer is much easier to drill later than fill later. I think I have now worked out the glovebox light and security switch as well. There is a lot going on in there, and while the dash is out I may as well get it right.

I got rid of the "Tutch Latch" because it jammed so often.

Replaced it with a magnetic cupboard closer.

The finishing touch was an ebony and pearl inlay guitar bottom button for the door pull.

I did the same in getting rid of the Tutch Latch. Stupid thing.

The guitar bottom button looks great. I was going to source a proper handle, but I think I prefer that!

In defence of the tutch latch - I got a new one from Kelvedon (and from SJ by mistake, though they are identical). It is working perfectly for now at least. Obviously I may not be so sanguine in a few years.

Just waiting for the glovebox light and switch to arrive to finish it all off.
