+2 centre console?

PostPost by: HCA » Thu Jun 25, 2020 8:55 am

This is a real huge shot in the dark question - but might anyone have a +2, the later short type, centre console for sale?

The workshop doiong my leather re-cover has had to give up on the centre console as it is made of cheap plastic that we knew was cracked in many places, but it is disintegrating as he takes the vinyl covering off. I am going to have to make a new one I think in GRP using what I can salvage from the old one to make up a crude former/mould. Unless I can find another, but I guess most will also be cracked.

The upholsterer was surprised as he expected better from old British quality :D :D :D I tried to convey to him that Lotus and quality are two words that do not mix...

Once in a blue moon, the gods smile down on you. The second call I made to a Lotus parts supplier, SJ Sportscars, came up trumps! They supply these consoles in GRP - £52! This is a bargain I reckon! Should be here in 4 weeks!

I am one happy bunny! I do not see a way of deleting a thread once posted though, so apologies. Hope not wasting anyone's time.

Yes I fitted a SJS supplied late type +2 GRP centre console last year. All good although needed a bit of tweaking to the fibreglass around the gearlever grommet area and also where it butts up to the dash before I gave it to the upholsterer.
So I suggest you do the same and check how it fits before giving to your upholster man to cover it in that beautiful leather. :D

Useful advice - thanks!

As I am in the throes of making a new dash, then I might wait until it is mounted. Tell me, is the console an exact replica - ie does it have the dish around the gear lever where one can fill it up with coins and junk? I ask as I have seen some where the console is flat from back to front...

The one I bought from SJS was exactly the same shape as the original with the dish area around the gear lever just the same. I had a degree of trepidation when I ordered it and thought it looked a bit crudely finished when it arrived but the general fit was perfectly ok and when finished with new foam and in my case vynil/ basketweave sides as per the original all was good.

Alan,

As you may or may not know, I manufacture the long early type of +2 Console that were not covered in leather. I must say, your short Console and your leather person did a great job. It looks terrific and if I needed a short Console, I'd be proud to have one like yours in my car. Bravo, .......good job!

Yes indeed Frank!
I waited more than 30 years to get an original early Plus 2 console.
And then Frank, you answered my prayers.
Too late for my first Plus 2 which a mechanic managed to incinerate, but perfect timing for the replacement,
now almost complete, and which was last on the road im 1977!
Thanks again Frank!
The result of your work is simply perfection.
And I paid for it so my joy is untrammeled by any commercial considerations!
Regards,
Bill
