indents on the crashpad of mine suggested they sit partially on top of the pad. The cover plate + screws then hold it all in position.

OK just to be 100 clear, because my new crashpad is shortly to be covered and I think I have misunderstood how it all goes back together,

It should be: COVER PLATE then VENT then CRASHPAD and all of that then held down onto (in my picture) the green fiberglass.

NOT COVER PLATE then CRASHPAD then VENT

Is that correct?

Yes. Crashpad sits on top of the body moulding above the heater. Some crashpads were stapled to the back of the dash, there is excess plastic on the original ones that fits between dash and body.
The vent is twisted up into a position where it rests on the pad (not by much). The screws hold the metal cover, pass through the holes in the plastic vent and self tap into the body. I will take a picture as I have mine half in. I took the pad back out as a small repair looks like it is cracking again and am thinking I will put the windscreen in first... The pad is original so a bit delicate. Also the vents and covers are handed to spread demist air correctly. The vent only goes in one way and then match the top cover up.
