Glove Box Lock

I have been told the glove box lock should be keyed the same as the ignition lock. Can anyone verify, or deny, this? My keys will not operate the glove box lock. Obviously the PO pried the glove box open, requiring a new catch. I still have the lock. Can they be re-keyed to match the ignition keys?

it depends upon which model you own.
for instance, if you have a dash ignition, it might?
but if you have a steering column ignition steering wheel lock, then NO.
my Sprint, the ignition steering wheel column lock is its own key, but I have a separate door key and a separate trunk lock key that also opens the glove box lock. (3 keys total)

others may have it different?

I have a dash ignition. The key fits into the glove box lock but will not turn. Apparently the same series but a different cut. I haven't tried the trunk lock. Thanks for the suggestion.

if you have the glove box open you may find the key number on the back of the lock. also you may find that jiggling the key in or out as you turn will open the lock.. which can be embarrassing if you are complaining to the guy who just cut you a key. the lock barrel can be replaced but hard to find the correct item and watch for the spring if you dismantle

A good locksmith should be able to rekey the existing glovebox cylinder (barrel) to match your ignition key. What series is your car? I had an S2 with the glovebox lock, but the S3 I now have just has a pull knob - the dashboard has been replaced and I've always wondered if the pull knob was original.

With my S2 the luggage compartments ( Glovebox, Boot)share the same key,
doorlock and ignition the other. Same on the Lotus documents.
May be usefull leaving the Engine running while putting up the hood

'68 Plus2 and I keyed all the locks to match..ignition , doors, boot, glovebox and petrol cap , it can be done with a little skill and perseverance...

same with my federal S4se - a coupe, so my guess is that it may be to keep safely (...) one's possessions in the boot and glovebox when one leaves his car to a valet parking or at a garage...

On my 1972 Sprint the Glove Box is touch Latch no Lock

My S3 has the ignition and door locks operated by the same key, and the trunk and glove box by a different key. Different numbers (although very close in sequence.)

It's kind of obvious when you think about it. :D When you pull up at a posh hotel and hand your keys to the Valet and say "Park this for me, please", you don't want him/her able to open your boot/trunk or glove box. So they are on a separate key from the door+ignition.

It's kind of obvious when you think about it. :D When you pull up at a posh hotel and hand your keys to the Valet and say "Park this for me, please", you don't want him/her able to open your boot/trunk or glove box. So they are on a separate key from the door+ignition.

Probably not, but I was talking about the reasons for the key/lock designs in the 60's.
