S2 bonnet release cables - repair

PostPost by: PaulH » Sun Jun 16, 2019 7:12 am

I've posted a video showing a repair to the bonnet release cables of my Elan S2. My first go with silver soldering so you'll have to make allowances for that.

Paul, not sure if you are aware but Lotus fitted the bonnet catch to bulkhead with the screws going into a double spire clip from inside of the car incase the cables /catches break, you can then remove them from inside the car.
I could be wrong but yours appear to have screws fitted from the engine side.

I'm not sure if the double spire clips are available any more, does anyone know if you can still get them?

I could do with a couple of spares....

Another nice video Paul, keep them coming please......

I made a thin clamp plate with two nuts silver soldered onto it fitted in the engine bay with two screws from under the dash.
Paul, I Iike your method of fixing a threaded tube to the end of the cable. That is much tidier than mine, and is now a job for sometime. Thanks,

That's intriguing. You're correct that I've fitted them with the screws from the engine bay side. I've double checked my photos from when I took the car apart and that's definitely how they were fitted, and the double hole spire clip was bonded/glued to the dashboard side. My car was registered February 1966. Do you know the date of the information in the workshop manual? I wonder if they made a change because some bonnets got stuck due to some failures?

Sorry I don?t know the date of the manual but it is for the early S1/2 cars, I believe the spire clips were carried through the whole range of Two Seater cars (S1 to Sprint) in the engine compartment, the illustration in the manual shows a Bourne car with the spire clips under the bonnet (you can see both the Bourne plate and spire clips)
Both my S2 (Nov 64) and my Sprint (Oct 72) have the spire clips in the engine compartment.
I used to have a 67 S3 SE which also had them on the engine side.
