Genuine Elan Replacement Chassis

PostPost by: Roger Allen » Fri Nov 02, 2018 3:09 am

I need to replace the chassis on an S3 DHC that I?m restoring in U.K. with a genuine Lotus Replacement. From quotes I?ve received there is a range including competitively priced replicas.
I?ve gleaned from these pages that Miles Wilkins was a supplier but it?s not clear if he is still in business and that maybe the LR chassis are produced by a well known fabricator in England. It seems to be a grey area, I?m pretty sure that I know which supplier I?m going with but any additional info would be most welcome.
Personally, providing the engineering is good, I?m not that fussed but any future buyer of the car would probably welcome a genuine Lotus Replacement Chassis thus preserving some sort of originality and provenance.

Miles is still supplying parts and has always had the contract from Lotus to supply chassis. He subcontracted it to gartrac, and I believe he therefore supplies the other suppliers.

So if you want an ?LR? chassis number, then that?s the route to go.

It doesn?t mean other suppliers can?t get alternatives......

Where is the LR number stamped on the frame? I have a replacement galvanised chassis supplied through Chris Neil in the mid 1980s, and I haven?t seen a number. I thought maybe it is a copy?

The number on my chassis is front left near the engine mount. I guess a galvanised chassis should be stamped before the process and therefore might be difficult to see.

My mid 80's CN galvanised chassis has the LR number stamped exactly where Roger said - just forward of the left hand engine mount. Not that obvious or easy to see but it is there.

Thanks, I?ll take a close look in those two areas. Engine is coming out in the next day or two for a couple of jobs, so should be easier to see.

Found it! As you say, on the top of the front cross member.
Thanks
