S1 Dash Configuration

The PO of my car made a full width dash and covered it with vinyl. I'm going to have a new dash made and I'm trying to decide if I should go with an S2 dash or go back to the S1 half dash. I do have the glove box for the S1 configuration but I don't know how it attaches to the body. Does someone have detail photos of the S1 dash? Has any S1 owners switched to the S2 dash? Any problem I should be aware of?

My S1 glove box is secured by 2 bolts.

One bolt passes through the top of the box (from the inside) on the left hand side (my car is RHD).

The other securing bolt is the bolt located just above the heater pull in the attached photo.

This bolt locates via a GRP lug on the box.

I've been working on my car recently (hence the current removal of my glove box) - and I can say that having a removable glove box and less than full width dash makes it infinitely easier to poke about behind the dash.

I also like the look - especially with a glove box door.

Very nice looking dash, Steve. i like the look of the box dash as well but have not been able to find a source for a LH drive new box yet or a good used one. Your pic's will be helpful if I have to make one.

Hi Kurt,

While I've got my glove box out - I thought I would take a few more pictures just in case you want to fabricate your own.

The box and door are both original - but the dash isn't.

The door is made of 10mm ply.

The original oiled teak dash was got at by woodworm during the 23 years my car was left rotting in various garages between '76 and '99

The glove box lid hasn't matched the dash since the replacement dash was fitted when I restored the car.

So the other day I sent the lid to be re-veneered. I sent the unused radio blanking plate as the guide.

It won't be a perfect match - but hopefully it will be better than it was.

After the lid was removed I used it as a template to cut out a couple more lids (which are reversible and therefore either RHD or LHD).

Edit: The cut lids are reversible only until the back face is chamfered to accommodate the internal contours of the box.

If you wish I can make a paper tracing of the original lid when I get it back and post it to you (for future reference)

Hi Sandy,

I do have some old Lucas toggle switches (without hexagonal securing nuts) - but there are far more available on Ebay.

At least on eBay you should get the nut - and perhaps even the slip washer.

What are you after 2-position, 3-position .....?

Thanks much Steve!! And yes a tracing may come in mighty handy. The latch catch appears to be just a slotted bit of steel that I wouldn't have had a clue about without your pic's.
You should be getting your bonnet latch cable back as well as I finally got around to posting it.

Thanks Steve, yes had a look at those....I gather there's a couple of things that make 317880 special. The length of the threaded section to suit the thicker wooden dash and the internal configuration of contacts to make one of the spades "live" while the switch is in the off or park position, to feed the flasher relay. But others may know more about how interchangeable these lucas switches are.....
