S3 door pull screws

PostPost by: types26/36 » Fri Jul 01, 2011 8:31 pm

Can some one tell me what screws are used to secure the inner door pull handle, are they self tapers or a screw with a loose nut/speed nut? if a screw and nut how do you access the nut? .....by taking out the window motor?

Hi Brian,
On the S4 they look like lock nuts and washers. With the window raised I can just about get to them through the door lock access hole at the rear of the door - do you have that hole in your door? If you like I will take one out tomorrow and see what the thread is.
Regards,

Hi Roger,
No access holes behind that black vinyl you see on the door, only holes are the one for the motor, a small round one opposite the outer door handle, the one where the opening linkage is protruding and the one at the front for the hinges.

Hi Brian

The photo is of the LH inner door from 45/7334, I think the body number is 6819. My coupe doors for 6292 are in the trailer so not accessible right now. I don't remember putting pull handles back into 36/5520 but I'm sure there was some stuff that was supposed to go back in that never did. I don't know but I think that pull handle was S4 era, the door frame had the pull handle. Maybe your Coupe is later than any of my stuff and is a crossover?

Oh that's a pity, if the only access is through the window motor hole you'll have to take the frame out I reckon. I may regret this but I took out one of the screws from mine to try to identify it and it's 3/16" dia and 30 tpi (ish), the nut is 5/16" AF. Don't have any thread charts however so can't tell you exactly what it is.

I use a 10/32 nyloc nut, I think that they are 2 BA but they work in this non critical location. I looked in the parts Book (Yea, I know thats cheating) and the interior door handle that Brian shows in the his photo looks like SS, so that, according to the parts book there started to appear at 36-45/7400 so again Identifying the Elan could help here.

I found this picture of 36/7502 that I took when Bill got it. The body number is 2175
It clearly shows the handle in place for his SS.

Mine is a 1966 S3 SE - 6277 - and has the pulls on the window frame as did my original 1966 S3.

For general interest does anyone know when they were moved to where it looks as though it will bang your elbow!

Brian,

Your doors look exactly like SS. You have the shorter door handle that comes out into the recessed panel. I believe Lotus used very little BA fasteners, and that the screws on your pull handles are 10-32 UNF. I suppose if you wanted to change over all the pull handle screws and nuts, you could go with M5. The screws are supposed to be oval head, having a slight dome to them but tapered on the bottom to go into a countersunk hole. Don't buy too long a screw, or it will interfere with the window travel. BTW, I have my doors apart right now, so I could measure the length if you need it.

Brian,

I got interrupted during my reply and forgot to mention that you will need to remove the main door cover panel to gain access to the window motor. the window motor has three wires that are pull apart connectors and effectively polarized. There are only three screwws holding the motor into the door and into engagement into the drive cable spool. Very simple! Only trick is to run the window all the way up and tape it in position, before you remove the motor. That way you have room inside the door to work. There are two drive pins on the motor that engage the cable drive spool and when the motor goes back in, it must be somewhat aligned to the spool. The drive pins are covered with a plastic cushion, which has usually disintegrated and I normally replace it with a short length of tubing from the hardware store. You want a snug fit on the outside of the drive pins and a looser fit in the drive spool.

Hi all,

Seems to me that you almost need to put on this handle before you install the door frame (almost) I have this job to do but I am thinking I may drill & tap a piece of 5mm flat bar and fiberglass it in place so I can fit the handles anytime I like this would also allow the handle to stress over a larger area.

I will report back when i do this and let you know if I encounter any issues.

I'm not following you there...... when you say "you will need to remove the main door cover panel to gain access to the window motor" are you talking about the the trim panel which is already off as per my first picture in my first posting? or are you talking about something different? my second picture is of the side that does NOT need the pull handle replacing. Yes please measure the length of the screws required and any pictures would also be helpful.
