Prompted by Carlos' post, has anyone tried modifying the hinge mechanism? I was about to replace the bobbins on my car, I've remove the old ones that were beyond redemption and I've been considering using some sort of bearing instead.

Mike, my modification is modest: I drilled the threaded bush in the body and screw a bolt through from under the mudguard and into the threadedbush on the bonnet. Eventually when the car is complete there will also be a locknut on the end of the screw inside the bonnet.
With this mod, I can lay the bonnet into it's aperature and then screw the thread in outside in. It becomes a one person job to remove /refit the bonnet without having to worry about it flapping around. It's also a lot easier to adjust the panel gap.
Regards
Gerry

I "found" them on the door of a data cabinet at work and spotted the potential instantly, shame I'm not there anymore but maybe a piece of 1/4" rod with a bend?
Maybe lock/catch suppliers?

John,
Great idea, just the sort of think I was looking for.
I wish I hadn't cut out the bobbins already but I may well go down that path if I can source some spring loaded pins.

I did a mod here so long ago I forgot it wasn't orginal. I drilled through the bonnet reinforcing frame in line with the bonnet bobbins, and then brazed on 1/4" nut on each side. The 1/4" retaining screws are then screwed in and tightened up from the engine bay side. The wing bobbin were already worn oversize. It is only necessary to partially unscrew one side to remove the bonnet, using a 30" timber batten to prop the rear edge of the bonnet while doing this.
Bonnet removal/refitting is now a one-man job
