Wind deflector for Elan?

PostPost by: alexblack13 » Thu Jan 28, 2010 10:26 pm

Hi Guys,
Reading classic car weekly today I came across a short editorial on a company called Classic Additions.
http://www.classicadditions.com Those among you who drive of have driven a modern drop top will possibly know the benefits of a wind deflector. This company's editorial showcased their wind deflector products and directed you to their website. I thought I had cracked it until I clicked on Lotus, only to find the early Elans not catered for. Pity! However I have emailed them with a picture of the car etc and asked if they have any plans to produce one for 'our Elan'. I will let you know the outcome.

Meanwhile, does anyone know of any other company producing one? Anyone done a DIY effort that fits well and works?

After jumping out of the Z4, which has the said item snugly fitted between the seats, into the Elan for a few miles top down, One does not half miss this Item. Unfortunately the Z4 Item nowhere near fits the Elan. Had the Elan been fitted with high backed seats it probably could be adapted though.

Ah Well! Looks like another welding job on the horizon. Been looking at new tig machine though. Some nice special offers from my wife's employers at the moment. Oh yes!

Col used to have them on his website but it seems like it's no longer there.

Alex

I thought we were meant to be the southern softies! A scarf and good hat work well, cheaper and no holes to drill. Mind you, it wouldn't look as good as a deflector, at least on me!

Having said all that, I do have a deflector on my Saab convertible daily driver and it does make a difference.

Do you have a roll over Bar fitted in your Elan Alex?
That would provide a good frame for holding the Netting on a self made sub Frame.

Yes, a warm coat, woolly hat & scarf work just fine... :P
A Federal seat with a headrest helps too...

Its no big deal Its just really noticable when jumping from the little BM into the even littler Elan. It is even worse than riding my motorcycle. Very blustery.

It was just a thought. Gives one a laugh if nothing else. Even the smart arse answers!
Unlike, I suspect quite a few of you.... I still have ALL my hair....Hehh! Na na nana na....

It would make the car more usable on longish tours. Thats all.

As you were... :?

Alex, I like the idea and have been thinking about it for some time. I like the double hump arrangement, even if the 'screen' goes all the way across. Maybe even removable.

I?m sorry, Alex, but the wind deflector is just the thin edge of the wedge. Next you?ll insist on wearing a flat cap, then you?ll be driving along the slow lane at 50mph, and finally you?ll start complaining that there just aren?t enough public toilets any more.

Give in to it by all means, but you know where it will end??.

I'm in agreement there, all a bit "Hairdressery" but maybe there could be a small Testosterone deficiency lurking if our Friend Alex still has all his Hair.
Must admit that now, when I take my Elan out, I get the feeling that my Balls a shrinking or even self retracting into my Body.

Wouldn't it be a useful anchor point for the picnic basket?

Then all you need is heated seats ........ or you could go really retro and fit a pair of running boards - perfect place for the spare wheel and gallon of Pratt's Perfection old boy
