Plus Two Paint Schemes

PostPost by: Ted19428 » Fri Jul 15, 2005 8:37 pm

I am close to purchasing a Plus Two in very good shape. I have had some difficulty determining what, if any, paint schemes (besides solid color) were available on Plus 2s in 1971. I have seen some Plus Twos which appear to be two-tone (the roof is painted silver or white). I have even seen some that appear to have race/rally stripe(s) down the center of the car (hood/bonnet - roof - trunk/boot). The "Jim Clark" (yellow/green) scheme seems very popular. If anyone can shed light on this subject, I would appreciate it very much. Overall, I want to know whether either of these schemes were available from the factory, or, whether enthusiasts merely applied them later on.

Many thanks,

TED

Ted.
You'll find that the standard factory colours on +2s where one colour, and from 1969 and on the +2S130 there was the option of a silver roof. The only main deviation from this where the limited edition JPS cars that had a black body, gold coachline and gold roof.
Trevor Sparrow's site is an excellent source here, have a look on the link below:

All racing stripes will be owner's additions.

Does anyone have a color match# in duPont, PPG, Sherwin Williams or other for Lagoon Blue Metallic. I am having a really hard time finding a color match, since I have no reference color to try to match up. Also looking for the silver top color. I am in Virginia USA.

From a paint colour list I found somewhere on the interweb...

L 12 Lagoon Blue
PJ 6170A1130
ICI P0314339
Lotus Pt No. A036B6357V

Silver Lotus Pt No. A036B6355V +2S roof

The list on Trevor Sparrow's site doesn't look complete to me (who owns a factory confirmed Pistachio +2).

Greg,
I just had a pint of Lagoon Blue mixed at a PPG distributor last Thursday. PPG can match the color in their Global Base Coat product using the Mixing Number LOT 0225. It requires a clear top coat. Cost me $52 in California!

Thanks Tim and others! The paint companies want a number to work from or a color sample. In the US, they don't seem to have lists of odd British cars and colors from the 60's and 70's, unless the color is British Racing Green. I am still looking for a match of the Silver top color.
Help is appreciated!

ps just looked at a '67 elan S3 original with many papers, manual, tools. Has 79k miles, is original except for tires, the engine was rebuilt pre 1983 needs nothing but everything is old ......paint blisters; settled suspension...to the point where the front tires rub the fender wells on turning, frame seems in good shape at the shock towers but the towers are full of crap!; top has very small nick tear and the clear plastic is not clear any more; seats are there but may fall apart very soon and there is a tear in the drivers bolster; engine SUPPOSEDLY rebuilt in the early 80's with only 9k on rebuild. no water pump leak but could smell antifreeze in engine bay.( who knows how long the pump will last) . As it is everything is iffy! What's it worth? I was thinking of offering $8k

The "silver" roof on the later plus 2 was in fact silver 'metalflake' or gold 'metalflake' on the JPS cars. It was applied to the gel coat inside the moulds but can be sucessfully resprayed if your body shop is used to the technique (they have to keep shaking the mixture in the gun with a ballbearing inside to keep it agitated).
