Can anyone recommend a firm (if there is one), that can supply a good quality carpet set for an S2? It's a '65 LHD.
Thanks,
Fritz

S2's had the rubber "aligator texture" floor interiors, no carpets until the Coupe was introduced. If you want carpets the S3 is probably close. If you want to make your own there is a file you can download for an S4 but you need a cad program to read it'

If on the other hand you want new 'gator skin, JAE in California can supply it. I have it in my car. Unlike the original material, which was wrinkled thin sheet rubber, the JAE material has the wrinkles molded in, so it's flat on one side and wrinkly on the other. This means it's heavier. The kit comes with new felt and makes for a pretty good looking installation.
Their website is http://www.jaeparts.com/ but it is one of the most useless websites on the planet - all show and no go.

I love the sound of a torque wrench in the morning. Sounds like... progress.

I've recently got a set from JAE as well, and agree with Andrew...excellent cut and fit, and all the little bits you need. I think they are the only suppliers of this original looking rubber 'carpet' now.
Dont forget the trunk mat as well...that's a kind of hardura material...plasticy / rubber surface on a thin felt.
An S2 doesn't look right with anything else!

Thanks for the quick replies. I'd like to keep the car as close to original as possible even though this is only a temporary measure before eventually having the car completely restored.
I assume I'll have to cut everything to size and there's nothing off the shelf available?
Incidentally, if anyone has any good photos of S2 Elan interiors I'd love to see them as a reference.
On another note, I'm looking for a nice wood-rimmed steering wheel but don't really want to pay the ?750+ for an original S2 item. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks again.

The kit comes from JAE all pre-cut, with fitting instructions.
The steering wheels are crazy money at the moment, but they keep turning up. I bought mine off eBay only a few months ago for ?340, and it's in really good shape. My guess is that they won't stay at the daft high prices for long.
The door trim can be obtained from Sue Miller or Dave Bean.

Thanks Mark,
You posted whilst I was typing my reply! I've fired off a couple of e-mails to JAE so fingers crossed they'll have what I need.
Maybe I'll just keep a look out on eBay for a steering wheel although some of the prices recently have been incredible (especially bearing in mind what it costs to buy an Elan)!
Best.

I've just realised that the last time you posted, you'd just acquired a Sprint...and now a S2. Have you gone mad like the rest of us? Pics of the S2 required I think....and the Sprint.

Gary,
did the S2 get carpets when the Coupe was introduced?
My S2 was built in November 1965 and does have carpets. They look original as far as I can tell.

I had chassis 26/5803, which was one of the very last built...it had rubber carpets I'm afraid Matthias.
Sounds like JAE may have another customer.

Hi Matthias
I'm Not 100% certain but I think all Coupes had carpeting, I have not seen any before 36/5520 that I am aware of. I have not seen a Coupe with aligator hide floors in any event.

First I have to drop the 1/2 off the One , Now I come to find out I have to install the elephant hide floor covering or be labeled a cretain . Going to console myself with some Kentucky branch water and atone for installing carpets in my old S1 back in the 90's
anybody know where to get the jute underlayment they used back in the day ? nothing like that suff for holding moisture and rotting what little metal there is on and elan

It's been quite a few years, but I bought a complete repro set of the jute from Randall Fehr restorations.
Alas, it's still in the box awaiting some nice new carpets to go over top.

I hope that you at least have those homosote rib filler stripps to suck up and hold that extra bit of moistier so that the Jute can never dry out and can wick all the way through under the aligator hide over to the needles the call steel reinforcments.
I like to keep things to a minimum my self, Just a thin coat of black basecoat. Beauregard keep the passenger side pollished nicely
