External Temperature gauge

PostPost by: handi_andi » Thu Jul 12, 2007 9:59 pm

Having just successfully repaired my fuel gauge and clock, my attention is now drawn to my none workign exterior temperature gauge. However, before I start looking at it I was wondering if anyone knows how it works as am concerned that the tube might contain mercury in which case repair is a no go. any information gratefully received
thanks

i believe its a glycol/alcohol mixture have a search in the archives on here. I couldnt find any one to repair mine, so I got an after market smiths jobbie with a coloured face, I'm going to leave it like it is but it wouldnt be too difficult to fit the elan face and needle

I believe the bulb contains ether, which is toxic (and a fire risk) and why most instrument repairers refuse to touch them. This topic has cropped up a few times and as far as I am aware no-one has succesfully replaced or recharged the bulb. Perhaps there is scope for an electronic replacement?

Thanks Jeremy. The idea of an electric replacement mechanism had crossed my mind, I just haven't been able to locate a suitable donor item yet. Any one got any suggestions as to a suitable basis?

Niall
Thanks, does look interesting. Just not sure about playing with ether, even with it on ice. If all else fails though it might be an option if ether temperature gauges are still available over here.

has anyone tried this method out?
