Seal to Sterring Column Bulkhead and other queries

All,
I am trying to install and locate a new seal that comprises the plate and rubber seal where the steering column rod passes through the bulkhead.

I don't want to pay through the nose for a part that is as simple as a piece of rubber held between the body and securing plate.

has any one solved this one using simple basic parts as this area is a bugger to work on with Engine in place (carbs removed).

Does anyone also have a spare bonnet support bracket that fits under the front semi circular bonnet channel and fixed in place by the front turret mount bolts in the bulkhead as I cannot locate these anywhere - apart from copying one from some strip steel.

Ideas and suggestions welcome.

I was told that the steering column seal was a Spitfire part, and as such obtained a metal plate and rubber seal from Rimmer Bros who specialise in Triumph parts.
The plate was second had and the seal was new.

Fitting it will be a problem, so I shall wait until the engine comes out for a gear box change. In the short term I have glued a piece of felt to the bulkhead - this wraps around the column to create an effective seal.

Hi

Are you trying to stop draughts or water entering?

Personally I never bothered with the original fitting- it didn't seem to work too well on mine. I simply made the underfelt and carpet a close fit around the column. To stop water entering, if that's your problem there are a number of fixes- you could simply glue a short strip of suitably profiled rubber over the top of the column, in the engine side to divert any rain or mould a short "drip diverter" (for lack of a better name) out of grp over the column as I did.

If you're playing around with the column you could, at the same time, improve its location- the factory supplied clamp looks abit suspect to me so I designed what I think is a better one. Basically it's a clamp with two halves, one of which is welded at the correct angle to accommodate the column onto a flat plate which in turn is bolted to the bulkhead. The fixed part has two bolts captive welded to it to which the bottom half is bolted. Pad both halves with something suitable. More effective than the original and in fact if properly designed it in effect makes the facia mounted bracket redundant since the location is vastly improved and this bracket is no longer loaded. Saves the veneer on the dash from damage too caused by the column moving.

I found that water ingress came in between the steel plate and the bulkhead on my old plus 2, on my restoration project, i have fitted everything to the bulkhead with hylomar, the steering rubber grommet was a lousy fit, so I cut it , twisted it slightly so that it now fits snugly round the column and used lots of hylomar to seal it to the car and plate.

it seems to work with water being poured on to it

welll I just went and bought a tube of back silicone and filled the hole ----not concourse but it works ----ed

I bought two bonnet support brackets from Paul Matty a couple of years ago.
I think the part you are looking for is referred to as "Bonnet quad support"
part number BBRK026A and costs UK pounds 12.95.
