'71 chrome windscreen surround for a '73 +2S130, ??

Aha,

The missing piece of the jigsaw.

We must therefore assume that the relative advantages of a bonded in screen justified ditching a beautiful chrome surround in favour of a piece of plastic which turned yellow over time and was very difficult to fit.

Guys,
Are you talking about the kinda thing that inserts into the windscreen rubber, after the screen is fitted,a sort of finishing strip??thats reputed to be a pain to fit??
If you are,try woolies in Market Deeping,Lincs(trim specialists),or for a polished aluminium version, your local aircooled vw specialist

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the suggestion. The fact is that from about 1971 Lotus started bonding in the screens with a butyl rubber strip and using a surround made of plastic which had to be bent around the screen (see link below). It is very difficult to fit neatly and we were trying to think of alternatives. I believe the rubber seals used on earlier cars aren't compatible as the lip recess is much shallower.

Regards,
Si

Bl**dy hell, there's no way I'm imbarking on this myself after reading my fellow scandinavian's tale here.,.....
If my windscreen ever gets done, it's when I've got PLENTY money and the car goes to the UK to get a repaint, I'm not touching it... Yellowing plastic trim is beautiful!

The close-up is on my home computer so I'll send it this evening if you like. The trim is very neat but the only shiny area is a silver in-fill strip. I've forwarded a general photo of the car.

Your car is so unmolested it would be a shame to compromise its originality.

If anyone else would like to see it send me your email address and I'll do my best. The car in question is a Pat Thomas restoration in regency red and silver.

Best wishes,

Me thinks thats my car- though screen surround was nothing to do with kelvedon motors/ Pat Thomas. It was an off the peg trim surround off a roll at either auto windscreens or autoglass - Im very pleased with it and think it is a better way to go than using the "lotus" plastic surround. Post a pic Si and i will confirm or not wether the car you saw was mine

Hi Dave,

If you send me your email address in a PM I'd be happy to send you the photos of your car taken at Donington. My gallery quota is currently full with the Stoneleigh pictures (I tried to load the picture at 150kb and it said I was already 500kb over the limit?). If your registration starts with JLB I was very impressed with the detailing on the car and am using it as a benchmark for my restoration. Did you manage to rechrome the rear lights? Let's continue this in a PM.

Best wishes,

Si

In the +2 workshop manual, for the late model (glazed in) fitment, it shows both narrow and wide butyl rubber strips, but none of the "usual suspects" in the UK seem to list these. What's the best UK source, please? Or are they the kind of thing that a normal modern windscreen specialist would have anyway? I'm assuming (perhaps wrongly?) that they would no longer be available from Lotus? Also, the workshop manual shows two different interior finishing strips - does anyone know a UK source for these and/or their part number(s)? (I'm helping a French friend with an S130/5 and a broken screen....)
