Elan Tow Bar Original Lotus Part

PostPost by: tedtaylor » Thu Jan 06, 2022 12:22 am

here is a tow bar setup i found on an Elan i purchased. It was towed behind a motorhome when the owner was moving from California to Texas. The bars bolted to the frame back by the transmission if i recall, but there was no fiberglass cutting or modifications. i removed it first thing.

Cheers
Actually what I am talking about might be better known as a tow hitch, ie for pulling a trailer.
Because of required height etc it comes through the rear body, and has to be attached to the chassis.

Apparently there are several hitches available for the various iterations of the MX-5. Depending on the exact design they are rated up to 2000 lb with a 200 lb tongue weight. Pretty popular for towing track tires & tools. One fellow has over 40K miles towing a lightweight teardrop style trailer. One hitch design puts the receiver vertically so that nothing shows when the ball platform is removed. Removes about half the weight when not in use and prevents any scraping issues. Pretty cool!

Yep - that sells it to me! A small Elan, Emma Peel and I, minimal luggage and a five star hotel for a caravan...

I think you may have a bit of trouble getting the Emma Peel bit!
