Which spring,

Number 10 or number 17 or the one that helps open the bonnet?

PS: I don't think I've ever seen that number 17 one. I don't have one on my car ??

Bill, I think the #17 springs are for the S1/S2s.

They operate the headlamp micro switches. My April '67 S3 has them. Were they dropped on later cars?

Headlight pod mounted micro switches came in early1967, they replaced the pull switches together
with changes in relay arrangement.

Surre, 17 is Type 26 and possibly S3.

But are springs 10 and 18 the same type? The latter has to return (or raise in fail-safe) both pods. Did the federal Elan+0 do fail-safe or was it just Elan +2?

Yes it did, from about 1969 on I believe (from 1970 on according to the parts book...) That's the single cylinder & spring shown on the RHS of the picture.

Failsafe on my 69 Federal S4. Built May 1969.

Microswitches built into the headlight pull switch. Not up front on pods.

Are you still looking for the spring wire diameter? The issue seems to have gotten lost along the way...
