Whoa, Stu. That would be crazy. I have never had the bonnet release while driving my car, but I haven't been cornering at track speeds, either.
As for the parts catalogue diagram of bonnet and the lining . . . I can definitively state that my car, a Feb 1970 Plus 2S Federal, came from the factory with a one piece bonnet liner (that "hardura" stuff with the sisal/felt backing) and no center cutaway (although the area under the Stromberg bulge was cut away, as you obviously can't make that hardura stretch and follow that bulge). So . . . on that day, on that car, that's how Lotus did it.

Randy, there just might have been two done that way. My '70, +2S (fed), 0053N is exactly as you have described.
