Medici blue - stirring up the pot

PostPost by: cabc26b » Mon Feb 01, 2016 5:05 pm

+1 on Grizzly's Comments -

I started by color matching to the original paint ( uncovered during paint removal ) I repainted the car using PPG Concept single stage vs base clear as for me it looks true ( truer ? ) to original paints .

The formula kicking around the website is the one I posted many years ago .

This is the color I came up with for my last restoration. It is a modern base coat clear coat water based paint. What do you think?

To me that looks very good, Bob, and you may have gotten it. I can't tell exactly since to me even the pavement seems to have blue tint. Could be my eyes, computer, the camera....??

I really can't come to terms with water based paints though. The little shop I've had do work for me for years decided to upgrade and put in computer controlled water based mixing. I had them repaint the hood on my Miata which is black and the paint, to my eyes, doesn't match. I'm now looking for a new shop.

Kurt.

1) My car is not Medici Blue, I've never stated it was Medici Blue, and it's no where close to Medici Blue. Let me also say, I love Medici Blue and had a wonderful 65 S2 Elan in Medici Blue which I sold to my friend Jack Martin. I'll never forgive myself for selling that car. Oh well.

2) ZOG - You have an excellent example of the real Medici Blue !!! It looks great!

3) CAB26 - I have seen your car in person and it too is magnificent!!! Absolutely Terrific!

4) I'll probably paint another car in Medici Blue in the near future just because i love it so much!

5) No one has ever been able to tell me what color my car is and no one has been able to identify the part number on the can of Lotus Paint. I'm calling it Wedgwood Blue.

There, it's all settled!

cabc26b that's a nice looking Elan you have there. (looks bang on to my Cellulose colour chips, it has that slight green tint to it)

I have a bit of a thing for the early cars, i think window frames spoil the look with the hood down on the later cars and i love shape of the rear quarter panels.

So while I've been recouping from an operation I did a little more checking. I have no actual paint samples to compare anything to, but I keep coming up with PPG 12873. This is the same as the Triumph spitfire "Powder Blue" and the "Gulf Blue" as used on the GT 40's and other Gulf racing cars. Looking at Internet pictures makes it impossible to tell though. There are several Elan written sources that mention Triumph Powder Blue as being the same as Medici Blue. As an edit, this is also the exact same color as Rootes group cars of that era. So Sunbeam Alpine and Tiger Powder blue has the same code. It would be interesting to get a sample and compare it to some Medici cars.

FYI, I've said it before, but cabc26b's car with the silver hardtop is the color I imagine when I think of Medici blue, and what I hope mine will look like some day.

I'm going back to the original Medici blue on my S1 as well. I'm planning on having a spot from the bottom of the door scanned but will be hassling George [cabc26b] as well. I think his is perfect and the silver shade he has compliments it completely. In fact that may attribute to the perception of the blue.

Beautiful car George!
