Screen washer pump

PostPost by: phil1800 » Mon Feb 14, 2022 5:39 pm

The original washer pump on my 67 S3 never worked, but as this is now a TÜV/ MOT major fault, I had to tackle this. I cut the aluminum flange of the pump and removed the pump mechanism. To my surprise it looked flawless after more than 55 years. The pump did not prime itself by pumping, but after I filled the rubber bladder with water, it now works as it should. It seems the trick is that the system needs to be primed and needs a non return valve at the reservoir. There was none on my system and I haven‘t found the valve in the parts catalogue either. Any ideas if there was a non return valve on the original system?

I had the same issue with the Tudor electric pump, got tired of it not priming, so bought a Land Rover part from the UK (AMR6676) & inserted it in the line:

Works well now.

Would that black thinggy between the bag and the brake pot be a nonreturn valve?
We are supposed to be having fun, are we not?

Yes, should have been more explicit, that is the Land Rover non-return valve.

I just fitted a non-return valve.
As the suction side was the problem, a washer bottle suction end sieve with integrated valve did the job.
They also have inline valves for the other end. I found them at the usual suspects for vintage washer stuff.
