Boot brackets and remote catch assembly

Andy, my 1972 car had the same arrangement. The bending loads from the brackets bolted to the thin fibreglass underneath the bumper had resulted in severe cracking, tearing and water ingress compounding the problem. Others have reported the same problem.
It's a very poor design, not at all well thought through.
My own view is that repairs back to the original design will result in future failures as per original. Either that or don't use the boot.

The boot floor support angle which attaches to the fiberglass body below rear bumper is too low to clear the spare tire. It looks like I will have to raise all the floor support brackets. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

I looked at mine and it fits just fine, is it possible you have a larger spare? Maybe that’s a dumb obvious question but that bracket is exactly how mine looks and I went and looked at it and the wood sits right down on the angle piece of metal, but your tire looks pretty robust! Gordon

Hi Gordon
Thanks for the response. I don’t have a spare mounted but I set a standard 165 X 80 profile tire in the well and it’s at least an inch higher than the wood. Do your boards rest on the other angle support brackets? Is it possible to get a few pictures and a measurement of the board to bottom of well? I’m stumped.

Here are some pictures and measurements and it sits on the two left brackets and then the L angle piece that attaches to the bumper and then by the fuel tank it does sit on that tire in my car and then the piece on the right fits on the battery, Gordon

My measurement at the large support angle is only slightly less than yours. I think it’s a combination of factors including the tire not being inflated on the rim, one of the board ribs was contacting the tire and not having the other support brackets installed. I think it’s problem solved. Thanks!

I have DIY floor boards but my experience is thee is minimal clearance to the spare tire. Need all the mounts in place and floor re-enforcement on the boards corectly located to not interfer.
The rear support is very flexible in the vertical plane so I have wedged a bit of wood under mine to hold it up. Probably would be better to modify the bracket to make the arms to body more ridged or another solution.

Should the LH board not sit directly on the tyre so that any weight is transferred straight to the floor through the tyre? This will reduce the load on the brackets and body work and help prevent the cracking. The lip on the LH board then supports the RH board and the big bracket just keeps the boards in place. This is how I've configured mine. The brackets look too flimsy to support any weight from luggage etc.

Yes, my left hand board that sits on the tire is not ribbed but the right one is ribbed and then also has a piece that matches the depths of the ribs which the left hand piece sits on top of so that their edges are right together. Gordon

Are we comparing like with like here? Seniorchristo lists a 67+2 at the bottom of his posts. My understanding of the changes made when the shell was modified to accommodate the inline silencer included recessing the boot floor to lower the spare wheel and therefore allowing the boards to sit lower...

Just to reopen this topic. I have come to reassemble the boot latch mechanism and I appear to have all the right parts but not necessarily in the right order, to miss quote Eric Morecambe.
I have the bell crank mechanism and the rod that connects to the latch but having spent a couple of hours trying to assemble them as per the manual, I am stumped. I can get the latch mechanism to work but the end of the rod appears to be 180deg out to the hole in the slider. What am I missing? Anyone got pics of the assembly?
Here’s the problem.

I am missing that rod and as long as you brought this up, could you possibly give me a measurement on that rod from end to end, thanks Gordon thought I’d just make one up
