Door Locks

That is not quite correct, the S2 outside handle is bolted to the door and is a compleatly seperate unit from the the lock/barrel/mechanism/inside lever which is an all in one unit with the push button with key slot protruding through the outside handle.
It is nothing like the S3 or S4 handles.

Here are pictures of S2 door handles from the outside. The left-side barrel is missing - in the closeup, you can see the slot that retains the barrel in the sleeve, and the hole at the back of the sleeve that the actuating rod at the back of the barrel goes through (I think). What I am calling the "sleeve" is the same as the bit that was outlined in the photo a few posts back.

I love the sound of a torque wrench in the morning. Sounds like... progress.

Andrew,
The barrel that is missing is not part of the outside handle (shown in your pic) it is part of the compleat inside mechanism. Well it is with my S2 and my chassis number is reasonably close to yours 26/3944

Exactly. The exterior handle fits over the sleeve (best seen in the close-up) and the barrel protrudes through the handle, but the sleeve and the barrel (with lock tumblers inside) are part of the inside mechanism. RD Enterprises website has a nice picture of a reproduction door handle - if only he carried the lock mechanisms as well!

Thanks for the tip. We should place bets on what the final price will be. My guess is around 400 pounds based on the last pair I saw go for around 400USD each.
No luck finding parts from a donor car yet either. Mind you, with the copius quantities of turkey being consumed lately, I have not been that diligent in my search.
Thankfully on the S2 it's not too hard to reach in and use the interior handle to open the door since pressing the barrel in renders mine impossibly jammed...

Darren,
I've just noticed, looking at the eBay locks again, that they are non-locking - so I guess the barrel sleeve will be blind.
What Lotus Elan were they off then?
There's a LH lock on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LOTUS-ELAN-DOOR-L ... dZViewItem
I know this is the wrong side for you, but I'm sure the barrel will be common, and could be switched.

Probably off the rear doors of the donor car from which they were scavanged...? This seller seems to keep coming up with them.

Hi
Just to repeat a reply I made earlier.
It's possible top fit radial pin tumbler barrels into these locks. They're made by a firm called HYKEE. They are thief proof and require no mods to the door or handle. Made of brass they are vastly superior to the originals and a damned sight cheaper. The firm supplies countless locks of this type for a huge range of classic cars.

Just lost another lock to a sniper . This is three or four now - I've lost count. I just hope these locks are going onto cars and not onto shelves as investments. Guess I'm going to have to up my maximum next time a good one comes along.

Item no. 130078928687. I think it was an LHS mechanism, a little ratty looking, in a lot with a door handle and striker plate from an S3 or S4. Went for 36 GBP.
