Sill Replacement...can The Body Droop?

PostPost by: alaric » Sun Apr 10, 2005 7:28 pm

I had the same problem - the body had sagged. I experimented and found that I could easily jack up the outer sill so that it all lined up. I used the original holes in the fibreglass inside and out, with large reinforcing washers to spread the load. I created a flat for the washers on the outside with a very large drill bit - about an inch across. It seems to have worked. I plan to re-dress the holes at some time, as I hit matting on a couple of them, and would like to hide the washers.

Hi,
Guess what, I'm the fella who bought the white +2s that was advertised on e bay -haven't owned a Lotus before, but impressions so far seem good. Biggest problem at the moment is the water pump which is shot, poor wiring, and yes the sills aren't in good shape - but the chassis isn't galvanised as far as I can see, although some of the wishbones have been replaced. Anyway it'll be a nice project!

Hi There

Best of luck with the car. It looked really nice. I like them in white. Have you had the wheelarch covers off to have a look at the sills?, or is it clear from the lack of jacking points!

You will find lots of advice about the water pump if you do a search. Whereabouts in the country are you?

Zetec+ 2 under const, also 130S. And another 130S for complete restoration. Previously Racing green +2s with green tints. Yellow +2 and a couple of others, all missed. Great to be back 04/11/2021 although its all starting to get a bit out of control.

Berni - I'm in Leigh On Sea, Essex.
Phoned up QED (Hope I got that right) yesterday and ordered head gasket, sump gasket and water pump kit, which I'm told is what I need, and it arrived today - great service. Now all I need to do is get the pump changed. Something to do this weekend.
If anybody can point me in the direction of the best manual with details on how this is done, I'd appreciate it, looks reasonably staright forward - hopefully not famous last words!

Forgot to say - Thanks for the words of encouragement.
Sills - no need to look, they're obviously shot. But the door tops line up nicely in the aperature, so my thoughts, when I looked at the car initially was that there can't be too much distortion. Once I've sorted the engine out a bit, I'll look at electrics / sills next.

I know Leigh On Sea. But there again I would do, I went to Southend High, and married a girl from Westcliff. As soon as my plus 2 is on the road I will motor down for a seafront cruise..........
