Strengthen A Standard Chassis

PostPost by: berni29 » Fri May 14, 2004 6:12 pm

Hi All

I have two original chassis. One from a 1968 car and one from a car first registered in 1977. Both have a fair bit surface rust, but seem OK. I am going to get both shotblasted and zinc powdercoated. Then I will waxoyl the closed section. I intend to use one and sell the other.

I have seen the TTR pics and AVO drawings of the strengthed chassis on this site, and wonder if it is worth doing for a road car. My last car develped two big cracks on the main chassis rails an inch or so behind the turrets. I do drive fairly fast and in our area there are more speed humps than you can shake a stick at. By the way, I do slow down for the humps!

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thanks

Brian,

If you have the chassis on the bench, you certainly should take the opportunity to do the reinforcements. I have had to repair the front turrets (transverse cracks just below the upper wishbone mounts) top chassis rails under the engine mount brackets, and rear strut mounts (the "ears") which had folded up.

Nice website !

Yep. The motor mounts also crack. Do it all.

Hi

I think I will have a go at it. I have not done much welding before, especially with MIG, but you never know till you try!

Thank you for the comment about the website.

Happy motoring!

;) Hi! Just admired your workshop and how you are progressing. Well done. I am in the same situation have +2 in bits.....body not as bad but 2metres of matting 4litres of resin 20 litres undercoat and lots of two pack have a fantastic result. Classic RED! Thanks to my painter. Chassis stuffed .......should say nearly all the car is stuffed but for what I paid great bargain.
I will watch with interest........try and put some photos in later

Hi

I am still trying to read up on the wonderful world of fiberglass. I have yet to lay any matting down as yet though, let alone 2 meters of it. The very thought scares me badly. I have been sidetracked by trying to prepare the ground to double the width of my drive. I hope to be filling in a 10ft by 50ft with readymix soon.

So how much more putting together have you got to do? Now that you have the car painted have you put the interior back in?

By the way, are you in the UK?

All the best
