Aluminum (aluminium) Door Kick Plates

Does anyone know if aluminum (aluminium) door kick plates were installed as standard from the factory? Two cars I have both have these plates. They are located where the small patch of carpeting would be on the front of the door cards.

They were on early S3's. I had them on #5727. I have a later S3 now, #7286, and it has carpeting. The parts manual might give the approximate change over but I don't have access to mine right now.
